Q & A
Q | Why are we redrawing elementary student attendance boundaries?
A | We currently have elementary campuses that are crowded and others that are under capacity.  With the opening of Willow Creek Elementary School (#14) for the 2010 - 2011 school year, it is necessary to revise elementary school attendance zones to better accommodate our elementary student population.

Q | Is my neighborhood affected?
A | The final list of affected neighborhoods is shown in the table above.

Q | Are these changes final?
A | Yes, the Board of Trustees voted 7 - 0 to approve this plan at the January 25, 2010 Board Meeting.

Q | How was this plan developed?
A | This plan is the result of over four months of work and numerous meetings by our Board of Trustees, School Administration, the school demographer, the District Planning and Advisory Council and our campus principals.  Multiple meetings have been held internally to go over various scenarios.  Administration has walked campuses, driven bus routes and talked with our Board of Trustees multiple times.  Two public meetings were also held to communicate the process, share the proposal, and to solicit input.

Q | Why did the plan change to leave Crestridge and Meadow Lakes at Greenfield?
A |
Ideally, we need to adjust attendance zones to relieve the growing population at Greenfield Elementary and that is why the proposal first recommended to move Crestridge and Meadow Lakes to Elkins ElementaryHowever, if the proposed plan was put into place, it was highly likely that these two neighborhoods would
have to move again when we open Elementary School #15, which is even less ideal for the families involved.  We looked at numerous scenarios and found that there were no neighborhoods that could be moved now to relieve Greenfield that wouldn't be likely to move again once we open Elementary #15.  We chose to operate at a higher enrollment than we would like at Greenfield in order to affect the least amount of families with Attendance Zone changes.

Q | Why did the plan not change and move Boswell Meadows to Bryson?
A | In the past two years, Lake Pointe has proved to be one of our fastest growing elementary schools and if Attendance Zones are not changed, will be over capacity almost immediately.
Lake Pointe does not have the same flexibility as Greenfield to handle more students because of the special programs located at Lake Pointe and the growth of the neighborhoods zoned to Lake Pointe.
In addition, Boswell Meadows is adjacent to Bryson Elementary and we believe that this move to Bryson will be an anchoring move for this neighborhood and allow them to have a home campus and that future moves will not be likely.

Q | Why did the plan not change to move the apartments east of I-35 move from Northbrook to Chisholm Ridge?
A | Like Lake Pointe, Northbrook is one of our fastest growing elementary schools and if we do not make changes now to the Attendance Zones, we will run out of space at Northbrook long before we are able to open Elementary School #16.
This community of apartments is not within walking distance of either school and we currently are providing bus transportation to these students.  We will continue to provide bus transportation to Chisholm Ridge.

Q | Can I apply for an in-district transfer?
A | Yes.  In-district transfers are available for students who wish to attend a campus other than the one they are zoned for.  The guidelines for in-district transfers can be found on the Attendance Zone page by clicking on the 2010-2011 In-District Transfer link in the left menu.  Applications for transfers will be accepted starting April 5, 2010 and are approved on a first-come/first-served basis as space allows.

Q | What is the likelihood that my transfer request will be approved?
A | Although there are no guarantees, the district has maintained a 85-90% approval rate for transfers for the past several years.  Once a student's transfer request is approved, that student will not have to re-apply for a transfer every year as long as the student wishes to remain at that campus and is still eligible to attend (lives in the district, etc.).  Parents have the ability to write down a reason for the transfer request on the application form (before and after school care, proximity to work, etc.).

Q | Are high school or middle school zones affected?
A | No.  High school and middle school zones are not being affected this year.
