BOS principal selected for national Principal Shadowing Week
Nika Davis, Principal of Boswell High School, recently was selected to participate in national Principal Shadowing Week through the U.S. Department of Education.
As part of ED
Goes Back to School Principal Shadowing Week, dozens of Education
Department officials spent time learning about the work of principals by job
shadowing them at school. Approximately 79 principals from across the nation were
paired up with federal education officials, which gave department leaders an
opportunity to experience the successes and challenges of implementing reform
efforts at the school-level.
Davis had the opportunity to host Ennise Henderson, Equal Opportunity Specialist with USDE, on the afternoon of Thursday, October 27. Following the visit, Davis was invited to participate in a nationwide video conference with U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. John King, Jr., to debrief the campus visits and discuss how federal policies play out in schools and classrooms.
“I was really unsure of
what to expect, but showing what we do each and everyday at Boswell was the best
part of the visit,” David said. “We visited classrooms, walked the building,
and discussed the campus vision. It was my pleasure to represent Boswell, Eagle
Mountain-Saginaw ISD, and the State of Texas in this unique experience.”
Henderson said the visit to Boswell
was insightful and inspiring.
“The
information you provided was invaluable,” she wrote to Davis in a thank-you
email. “The campus tour, classroom visits, and student observations were
unbelievable and impressive. I was truly impressed with the ‘family’
environment that you created for students, parents, and staff at Boswell High
School. You, and your staff, solidified my belief that an engaged and zealous
teacher is one of the key factors to academic success.”
Following
the visit, Davis was invited to apply for the Department of Education’s Principal Ambassador Fellowship Program. The Department launched the first Principal Ambassador
Fellowship program in 2013 in order to better allow local leaders to contribute
their knowledge and experience to the national dialogue about public education
and, in turn, learn more about education policy at the federal level. Since its
inception, 10 principals have been selected as Principal Ambassador Fellows.
